Every Victorian drivers licence will be uploaded to new national database

The government promises details will be secure – but some legal groups are not convinced..

The licenses of all Victorian motorists will be uploaded to a national facial recognition database to prevent identity theft.

The data from licences – including the drivers photo, name, address, gender and birth date - will be logged in the federal government's National Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution.

The push is coming from Peter Dutton's Home Affairs department and is part of a national plan to share Australian's driver licence details with federal authorities and private companies to fight identity fraud, organised crime and terrorism-related activities.

Only Victoria Police and VicRoads will be able to access the data at this stage.

"We've recently indicated that we'll download data onto the national identification database that the federal government is setting up," State Treasurer Tim Pallas said.

"We will allow Victorian agencies to use that identification, but we will not allow the Commonwealth to use that identification system until we're satisfied about the safeguards."
